Opis: Paraneoplastic neurological disorders (PNDs) are rare syndromes that are caused by, or associated with, an underlying neoplasm. The most common neoplasm among young male patients is testicular cancer, but the leading cause among other patients is lung cancer. Most PNDs are caused by an immune response against onconeural antigens, causing progressive neurological damage. The paraneoplastic antigen MA family contains three known members: MA1, MA2 and MA3. MA1, also designated neuron- and testis-specific protein 1, is a nucleolar protein in normal cells but localizes to the cytoplasm of tumor cells. MA2, also designated onconeuronal antigen MA2, is a nucleolar protein expressed in brain and testis. MA3 is highly expressed in brain and testis and is expressed at low levels in heart, trachea and kidney.

Opis: Members of the BAGE gene family encode antigens that are recognized by cytotoxic T lymphocytes and are also known as CT (cancer/testis) antigens. Generated by juxtacentromeric shuffling of the MLL3 gene, the ancestral BAGE gene was expanded by acrocentric exchanges and/or juxtacentromeric movements. BAGE, also known as B melanoma antigen 1 or cancer/testis antigen 2.1, is a 43 amino acid member of the BAGE family. Generally, BAGE proteins are not expressed in normal tissues, except in testis, but are expressed highly in melanomas, bladder carcinomas, head and neck squamous cell carcinomas, and lung and breast cancer carcinomas. BAGE proteins are not expressed in renal, colorectal and prostatic carcinomas, leukemias and lymphomas.

Opis: DZIP1 (DAZ interacting protein 1) is also known as DZIP or DZIP2 and is a 867 amino acid protein which is expressed as three isoforms, designated DZIPb, DZIPt1 and DZIPt2. DZIP1 is localized to testis, oocytes, ovary and fetal brain, as well as in embryonic stem cells and germ cells. In testis, DZIP1 is localized to the nucleus and also shows some cytoplasmic distribution in spermatogonia. DZIP1 belongs to the C2H2-type zinc-finger protein family, and, characteristc of the C2H2-type zinc-finger protein family, DZIP1 contains one C2H2-type zinc-finger region through which it is thought to interact with DAZ, an interaction that promotes spermiogenesis. DZIP1 expression is not found in those afflicted with Sertoli cell-only syndrome (characterized by the absence of germ cells in the testis), suggesting that the lack of DZIP1 may be involved in the pathogenesis of Sertoli cell-only syndrome-induced male sterility.
